Accessing Secure Areas
Under the Aviation Transport Security Act Regulations, users must have an operational need to be airside (in the aircraft operating areas) at BIA. Anyone who requires unescorted access to these areas at BIA must comply with the requirements for background checks as per the regulations and must be wearing a valid Aviation Security Identification (ASIC) Card or Visitor Identification Card (VIC)
Accessing Secure Areas
Airside access is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a role in maintaining its security. Depending on the nature of your visit or your specific duties, you may be required to obtain one of the following passes or licences.
Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)
Anyone needing unescorted access to security-controlled areas of the airport must hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).
This card confirms you’ve passed background checks and have a valid operational reason to enter these zones. Aviation ID Australia issues ASICs and typically processes them within 4–6 weeks, so we recommend applying early.
Visitor Identification Card (VIC)
If you don’t have an ASIC but need short-term access, you can apply for a Visitor Identification Card (VIC) or register here at the Airport Reporting Inspection System.
These remain valid for up to 28 days within any 12 months and require supervision by an ASIC holder, who takes responsibility for the visitor while in secure areas.
