Building a Greener Kimberley, One Flight at a Time

Sustainability at Broome International Airport starts with a genuine commitment to the Kimberley and its future. Through renewable energy initiatives, carbon reduction, and environmental stewardship, our sustainability measures support the region we’re proud to call home.

Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Broome International Airport is proud to be a regional leader in sustainable aviation operations. We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint while supporting economic growth in the Kimberley. Our sustainability strategy focuses on renewable energy, waste minimisation, and carbon reduction initiatives that align with both community expectations and regulatory requirements.

As a gateway to one of Australia’s most pristine environments, we take our role seriously and work closely with local stakeholders to ensure our operations support a thriving, resilient future for Broome and beyond.

Since 2021, BIA has been a participant in the International Airport Carbon Accreditation program. The Airport Carbon Accreditation program is also the only global, airport-specific carbon standard that relies on internationally recognised methodologies. It independently assesses and recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions through 7 levels of certification.  BIA are currently at Level 2 – Reduction, which recognises the reduction in our carbon footprint since we entered the program.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

These efforts are a key part of our broader Broome Airport Environment and Sustainability goals. To help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower operational emissions, Broome International Airport is embracing clean energy:

  • 01

    660kW solar installation

    • In 2024, BIA installed three separate solar arrays across our airport, including as part of shaded parking in our terminal precinct.
  • 02

    Carbon management plan

BIA has developed and is implementing a carbon management plan, which outlines measures for reducing energy consumption, including rolling out LED lighting and smart building systems to reduce energy consumption.

  • 03

    Future-ready design

Our infrastructure investments prioritise solar-ready and energy-efficient technology to futureproof our operations.

Carbon Emissions Policy

Broome International Airport is committed to reducing carbon emissions and making airport operations more sustainable every step of the way. BIA is committed to achieving Level 3+ under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program by 2026. Level 3+ recognises the airport as being carbon neutral.

Our Carbon Emissions policy can be viewed here.  We track and report our Scope 3 emissions each year, support airlines and operators in adopting lower-emission practices, and continue to invest in energy-efficient equipment and smarter, more sustainable ways of working.

Our approach to carbon management is central to the long-term success of Broome Airport’s Environment and Sustainability planning.

Environmental Compliance and Best Practices

Environmental compliance is a core priority at Broome International Airport.  Through the development of our Environmental Management Framework, we ensure we meet or exceed all relevant legislation. Best practice initiatives include:

  • Strict spill and waste management protocols
  • Regular environmental audits and reporting
  • Wildlife hazard management to protect native species and aircraft safety
  • Air and water quality monitoring programs

All these measures reflect our strong commitment to responsible operations and the Broome Airport Environmental Management Framework.

Our Fly Neighbourly Program

One of the unique advantages of Broome International Airport is its close proximity to the town’s tourism and commercial hubs—a feature highly valued by both locals and visitors.

To maintain this convenience while minimising disruption, we’ve implemented our Fly Neighbourly Program, designed to reduce the impact of aircraft operations on nearby homes and businesses.

As part of this program, flight paths are carefully planned to direct aircraft over less-populated areas, including local waterways and the ocean, wherever operationally possible. These procedures ensure that most take-offs and landings avoid sensitive community areas.

By working with pilots, operators, and the wider aviation community, Broome International Airport is committed to operating in harmony with the town we’re proud to call home.

The company has set up an information and feed-back line for people wanting to know more about the Fly Neighbourly policy. The number is 08 9192 6357.
