The six seasons of Yawuru country at Broome airport

Yawuru Karajarri artists, Martha Lee and Maxine Charlie, capture the six seasons of Yawuru country through their vibrant style of art which can be viewed in the BIA Arrivals terminal building.
Each piece of art on the floor and column represent the artists’ connection and depiction of Buru (country). Yawuru people live by the seasons, and Country lets them know when the seasons change from the indicators that they see, feel, hear, smell, and taste.
Buru is the physical expression of the Bugarrigarra (dreamtime / deep history), the Bugarrigarra beings created the landscapes, named places, defined the language Yawuru people speak, and made their rules and customs.
We hope all visitors to Yawuru country enjoy this beautiful art within the Broome International Airport. As part of this display, BIA is proud to work alongside Yawuru in continuing to build and strengthen our relationship, acknowledging the deep cultural significance of Country and the stories it holds.
